Girl Scouts Deletes Tweet Congratulating Amy Coney Barrett After People Threaten Cookie Boycott

The Girl Scouts of America caught some heat on Twitter Wednesday after they tweeted out a congratulations to Amy Coney Barrett for “becoming the 5th woman appointed to the Supreme Court since its inception in 1789.” Considering the fact that Barrett seems very likely to set back women’s rights by several decades, not to mention marriage equality and healthcare in general, many on the left were not happy to see the ostensibly feminist organization celebrating her.

It got so bad that some were even asking for recipes for at-home Girl Scout cookies, which must have struck some fear into troop leader hearts.

Barrett was included in the image alongside the other women who have sat on the court, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was replaced by the new Justice after passing away earlier this month.

The Girl Scouts later tweeted that they deleted the post because it was viewed as being political and partisan, which the organization would like to avoid.

The Girl Scouts have sometimes struggled to maintain an apolitical reputation, in the past becoming a conservative target for and accepting transgender girls into their troops. The tweeted image may have been an effort to appear “balanced,” but in today’s climate, even mentioning certain names is going to kick up a partisan firestorm.

Of course, now that they’ve deleted the tweet, those on the right are accusing them of the political act of responding to political controversy.

Trying to remain apolitical about political topics on Twitter is always going to be a losing battle, but it’s probably for the best that the Girl Scouts deleted this tweet after so many signaled that their cookie money would be directed elsewhere next year.
