It was an emotional time for many people across the United States when the media finally decided to call the presidential election in Joe Biden’s favor. Tensions had been high all week, but the collective sigh of relief that so many gave had more to do with the tensions of the past four years.

CNN’s Van Jones ultimately captured the way many Americans felt as he reacted to Biden’s projected win live on air.

“Well it’s easier to be a parent this morning. It’s easier to be a dad,” he said, choking back tears. “It’s easier to tell your kids: ‘Character matters. It matters. Telling the truth matters. Being a good person matters.’
“And it’s easier for a whole lot of people. If you’re Muslim in this country, you don’t have to worry if the president doesn’t want you here. If you’re an immigrant, you don’t have to worry if the president’s happier to have babies snatched away, or send Dreamers back for no reason. It’s vindication for a lot of people who have really suffered.”

All of Jones’ remarks resonated deeply with those who had gone out and voted for Biden in hope of seeing the United States driven by something other than hate and divisiveness and fear for the next four years.

But while his words were right, many people were quick to point out that Jones has had no issues buddying up to the Trump family over the past four years, and some even went so far as to call him complicit in their reign.

More than one person pointed out that we will see a lot of this in the coming years — people who supported the Trump administration when it was beneficial to them now turning against them and rewriting history. The news cycle has moved so quickly, it’s easy to forget where people stand. But in the era of social media, there are always receipts, and people willing to pull them right back up.
