Trump Golfs While World Leaders Discuss Coronavirus Response

President Trump neglected to participate in a G20 session on COVID-19 on Saturday, opting instead to go golfing yet again as other world leaders discussed the pandemic that is still a raging threat in the United States.

Trump was present for the opening ceremony of the virtual event, though he spent much of the time tweeting, continuing to spread more baseless claims about voter fraud.

He also spoke briefly at the start, telling the other world leaders present “I look forward to working with you again for a long time.” In actuality, this weekend marks Trump’s final G20 summit because he lost his bid for reelection.

Within two hours of the start of the summit, Trump had bowed out entirely, leaving the White House to go to his golf course in Virginia while the rest of the world spoke about pandemic responses in their respective countries. No one filled in for him — the United States simply was not involved.

This was Trump’s 298th golf trip since he became president. He’s spent every weekend since he lost the election golfing, even as the United States continues to hit new highs with COVID-19. Friday saw over 198,000 new cases reported, and the death toll continues to climb, with 256,000 Americans dead so far.

So to see the president continue to spend all his time golfing and insisting he’s going to overturn the results of the election, rather than put any effort into getting the pandemic under control or even discussing it with other world leaders, is off-putting, to say the least.

The summit continues throughout Sunday, and Trump is already going on the defensive over reports of his bailing yesterday.

“Just arrived at Virtual G20,” he tweeted. “Was here yesterday also (early), but some of the Fake News Media failed to report it accurately – as usual.”

Like Trump’s endless rantings about voter fraud that fill his twitter page, this tweet is also untrue.
