106 House Republicans Support Texas Lawsuit Attempting To Change Election Results

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is getting a lot of press lately after he filed a lawsuit against four swing states, requesting that the Supreme Court essentially overrule the results of the 2020 election, in hopes of handing the presidency back to Donald Trump rather than the president-elect as chosen by the American people, Joe Biden.

It’s a bold and despicable plea, and not one that many think is likely to be taken up by the Supreme Court. But the fact that Texas has been joined by 17 other Republican-majority states in trying to undermine our democracy is concerning on its own level, mostly in regards to how divided our country is, how far high-level Republicans are willing to go to get what they want at the expense of the majority, and where the United States may go from here.

And now 106 GOP members of the House of Representatives have also joined in the fight…against democracy, apparently. 

Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson spearheaded the charge, asking his fellow House Republicans to sign a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Paxton’s lawsuit. In it, he reiterated the claims that Trump has been spouting since before the election even began that there was widespread voter fraud that skewed the final tally in favor of Biden.

These claims are so unsubstantiated and baseless that Trump’s campaign has now lost 53 (out of 54) court cases in various states trying to alter the results of the election. 

And Johnson doesn’t have any additional information about this alleged “voter fraud” to share with the Supreme Court, instead admitting that “we are not seeking to independently litigate the particular allegations of fraud in our brief,” but rather “state our belief that the broad scope of the various allegations and irregularities in the subject states merits careful, timely review by the Supreme Court.”

BuzzFeed compiled a list of the full 106 GOP members — over half of the Republican representation in the House — that signed onto this last-ditch attempt to steal the election for Trump, noting that “among the representatives who signed on are several members who have just won races in the very states whose elections they now allege are so rife with ‘irregularities’ that they want the court to throw out the results.”

“It really should go without saying at this point, but nobody involved in this should ever be allowed to live this down,” editor Parker Molloy tweeted. “They should forever be known as the people who tried to overturn an election simply because their candidate did not win.”

Again, while it’s unlikely this particular motion to overturn the election goes forward, the greater significance should not be ignored.
