The CEO of Goya is back in the news after he allegedly named Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the company’s Employee of the Month, according to a Daily Wire article. CEO Robert Unanue claimed that sales increased by 1,000 percent after many people, including the congresswoman, trashed the brand following his public support of Donald Trump.

Ocasio-Cortez soon pointed out that she did not “lead a boycott” of Goya foods as has been repeatedly suggested by right-wing figures including Unanue, but simply “googled how to make my own adobo.”

Conservatives and their favored news outlets have frequently targeted the young congresswoman of color at any chance they can get, and it’s getting sadder by the day as Joe Biden’s Inauguration Day approaches.
This isn’t the first time Trump supporters have made a huge deal out of an alleged “boycott” that didn’t really happen because some people on the left were unhappy about the actions of CEOs or other executives. In reality, many Democrats spoke out when Unanue appeared at the White House in July to say that the nation is “blessed” to have a “builder” like Trump for a president.

Before AOC caught wind of it, former presidential candidate Julián Castro was the first to condemn Unanue’s actions, saying that “Americans should think twice before buying their products.”
This led to a brief trend of people posting recipes to replicate popular Goya products and suggestions for alternatives. In response, right-wing politicians including Ivanka rushed to support the brand and made some cheesy bean-related photoshoots before the next Trump scandal made everyone forget about it.

Perhaps Goya is looking for a quick end-of-year sales boost before the administration changes hands, as few seem to believe that the original marketing ploy was really that successful.
