A video leaked from an elevator security camera shows a man who shoved his way onto an already-crowded elevator getting quite a beating after he took off his mask just to cough on one of the other elevator riders. The footage ended up on Reddit’s Public Freakout forum and quickly went viral, with over 74,000 upvotes, as people lived vicariously through the man who taught the elevator cougher a lesson.

The video starts out showing a couple getting into the rather tiny elevator space with a third person who looks to be going out for a jog, everyone wearing masks and being normal.
After a while, the elevator doors open again for a fourth person, but the jogger appears to wave him off, probably because they already can’t socially distance like they should in that small space. The new person looks to step back as though he’s going to wait for the next elevator like a kind and considerate member of society.

Suddenly, as the doors are closing, the man steps forward and stops them, then steps inside to stand right in front of the jogger (because there’s simply no space). The new rider seems to look at the woman to the left quite a bit as though she’s saying something, though it’s hard to tell because she’s wearing a mask, but something must have been said because he takes off his mask and deliberately coughed on her.
This still didn’t have to go badly for the offending individual. The older-looking man with the woman calmly puts aside the dolly he was carrying, and when the doors open again, tries to gently direct the elevator cougher out. Instead, he fights back and finds out.
Maybe the strangest part of the video is when the cougher tries to get back on the elevator with the couple, but the other man easily chases him off.
After many months of pandemic and people being awful about the pandemic, Reddit users have absolutely no sympathy for the elevator cougher and plenty of praise for the man who taught him a lesson in civility.
