A church in New Mexico is receiving a lot of negative press after posting footage of a massive Christmas Eve service that shows a full house of singing, mask-less parishioners.

The Daily Dot reports that Legacy Church deleted footage they had posted on Sunday on its social media accounts after local media outlets started covering their COVID-19 violation.

Trying to hide their dangerous decision making seemed to only make the story more popular. A Redditor named u/the_hundreth_human got to the footage before it was deleted and posted it under the title “The megachurch that selfishly broke COVID restrictions to hold Christmas Eve service is trying to scrub all the video footage from their social media accounts right now.”
It’s also now on Twitter.

At the moment, churches in New Mexico are only allowed a 25% capacity and this place is clearly full. The footage is especially difficult for people to understand and accept because Legacy received almost $1 million in PPP loans. Seems like they’re using their money on candles?
Legacy offered a statement basically saying Jesus told them to:
“We have taken the pandemic seriously from the start, and have prudent measures in place. But when governments exceed their constitutional authority and contradict what we are called on by God to do, we answer first to His authority.”
God also told them to try and hide the evidence. A spokesperson for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Tripp Stelnicki, described the scene as selfish.
“They endangered the lives, livelihoods, and health of not only their parishioners but their entire communities, and given how quickly this virus can spread, potentially our state as a whole,” Stelnecki said.

Legacy has been sent a notice that they’ll be fined $10,000, which isn’t actually that much for a megachurch raking in cash from congregants willing to risk their lives in a pandemic. On the other hand, if they keep this up, they might not have enough congregants left.
