After being banned from Twitter and Facebook for fear he would incite further violence, Donald Trump finally released a video on Thursday condemning the terrorist attack on the Capitol.

“To demonstrators who infiltrated the Capitol: you have defiled the seat of American democracy. To those who engage in the acts of violence and destruction: you do not represent our country,” he said.

It was a thoroughly prepared speech that stood in stark contrast to everything he told those same people while the riot was underway.
“We love you. You’re very special,” the President of the United States said then.
The change in tune could be chalked up to any number of things — most likely involving Trump finally realizing he could be held accountability for inciting violence that left five people dead and dozens of police officers injured — but it’s leaving the delusional people who supported him scrambling to figure out what this means.
A few remain convinced Trump is still sending them messages about his long term game, while others have finally realized he has abandoned them to save himself.
“F—k Trump,” one angry user on the popular pro-Trump site TheDonald wrote. “He just had to say the word and hundreds of thousands would fight and give up their life for him and our country. But he p*ssied out. Like a b*tch.”

Another referred to his speech as a “punch in the gut,” shocked that Trump would tell them to fight for him and then turn his back as soon as they did.

Not everyone is turning on Trump. Some believe this is all part of his plan, or that the speech he gave condemning him was a deep fake, a video made to look like Trump was saying these things when he actually wasn’t.

It’s an appropriate end to Trump’s presidency. His supporters enacted violence in his name—violence that he very well may have supported had it ended in their favor—and he abandoned them in a last-ditch attempt to save himself. These loyalists were all he had left after systematically destroying his reputation, his relationships, and any goodwill people had towards him prior to 2016.
And now that they’ve seen him for what he really is, soon, he will have nothing.
