Robert Sanford was identified as the man who threw a fire extinguisher at police in one of the videos of the crowd outside of the Capitol.

Sanford wore a “CFD” during the riot, which was visible in other photos that also showed his face. The “CFD” stands for Chester Fire Department in Chester, Pennsylvania, from which Sanford had recently retired.

The former firefighter has been charged with multiple felony counts, including assaulting an officer.

Officer William Young ultimately had to go to the hospital after being struck by the “red object” in the video — presumed to be a fire extinguisher — on his helmet. The object bounced off Young and hit two other officers as well.

This is reportedly not the same fire extinguisher-throwing incident that the FBI is investigating in regards to the death of Officer Brian Sicknick.

Sanford’s photo was identified by someone described as a “longtime friend,” who subsequently reported him to the FBI. The interview with the person who IDed him says that Sanford went to the Capitol following “the President’s instructions” during his White House speech, and prosecutors said they later found a Proud Boys t-shirt in his home.

He worked as a firefighter in Chester from 1994 to February of 2020.

Sanford is one of several people in revered positions of service who have since been identified as Capitol rioters. A school therapist and a retired Air Force officer have been arrested in the days following the attempted coup, among others.
