Conservatives Try To Paint Fauci As An Anti-Vaxxer For Saying COVID Vaccine Isn’t A Miracle Cure

Conservatives are once again having a problem with the realities of medical science after Dr. Anthony Fauci warned the public that precautions against spreading COVID-19 should still be observed even after people get the vaccine. This is largely because none of the approved vaccines are 100 percent effective, and therefore those who have been vaccinated could still spread it to others who have not.

“So there are things, even if you’re vaccinated, that you’re not going to be able to do in society: for example, indoor dining, theaters, places where people congregate,” he explained. “That’s because of the safety of society.”

Right-wing pundits and actual anti-vaxxers took this to mean that we’ll never be able to eat at Chili’s without a mask again and that Dr. Fauci just wants to control us all, forever, by asking us nicely to be safe. Matt Walsh, Daily Wire pundit and man who self-identifies as a “theocratic fascist,” called Fauci a “power-mad lunatic” for his recent statements.

Others have responded by wondering aloud why they should bother getting the vaccine if it’s not going to magically let them do whatever they want right away. The answer, of course, is that if enough people are eventually vaccinated, we may be able to achieve the herd immunity necessary to effectively eradicate COVID-19, though that depends on how and how much it mutates.

Unfortunately, viruses, in addition to everything else about life, don’t tend to work in black-and-white terms. Medical experts have been warning for several months that vaccines for COVID-19 would not be a miracle cure that would 100 percent guard against the virus, just like flu shots don’t always prevent you from getting the flu. However, they can reduce your chances of developing the illness and reduce its severity.

Ignoring this, people like the programming director for BlazeTV are suggesting that Fauci is some kind of anti-vaxxer for being honest about how vaccines actually work.

Right-wing “satire” website The Babylon Bee attempted to “joke” that Fauci doesn’t believe vaccines work, but conservatives who don’t understand how vaccines work and that they’re not an all-or-nothing deal seem to believe their headline is actually accurate.

This is why we can’t have herd immunity.
