Every time you think Trump supporters can’t get even more intense about their misguided hero-worship of the twice-impeached former president, they go and outdo themselves.

The Conservative Political Action Conference kicked off yesterday, and the highlight of the whole thing for people watching events play out on social media was the appearance of a literal golden statue of Trump, sporting American flag shorts and, for some reason, holding onto a wand.

Seeing how Trump has been largely embraced by Bible-thumping evangelicals, it didn’t take long for people to start pointing out that this is basically ripped from the pages of Exodus.

The story of Moses features him leading his people through the desert as they search for the “promised land.” At one points, he leaves them for forty days to go grab the Ten Commandments from God and when he comes back, they’ve decided to make an idol to worship in the form of a golden calf.

The whole story is presented as an outrageous affront to God, and Moses destroys the thing when he returns. It’s a major point in the Bible, and one Christians often point to when they’re accusing others of “idol worship,” which can mean anything from becoming attached to physical possessions to putting a celebrity up on a pedestal.

So to see a literal golden statue of Trump, the guy many of these conservative evangelicals have been idolizing in a myriad of ways over the past several years, be brought into a political conference ahead of him speaking is, quite frankly, a hilarious and far too on-the-nose turn of events.

Nobody even has to reach for the jokes anymore when Trump loyalists hand them over like this. It’s almost offensive — though not nearly as offensive as actually having to look at this hellish ode to an insurrectionist.
