Amazon has announced it will not longer be selling books that frame the following things as mental illness: gay, lesbian, transgender and other sexual identities. Great news! The bad news is that those books exist and were on the bookseller’s list before.

Maybe the company wasn’t aware of that fact, because the decision is reportedly related to four Republican senators who complained to CEO Jeff Bezos about one of these “LGBTQ mental illness” books being removed to start, according to the Guardian. It was called When Harry Became Sally, which is already offensive for dragging a classic romcom into this mess.

Vice President for public policy Brian Huseman shared his response to the senators in the Wall Street Journal by saying that previously approved books are often removed from Amazon as they update their content guidelines.
“As a bookseller, we provide our customers with access to a variety of viewpoints, including books that some customers may find objectionable. That said, we reserve the right not to sell certain content. All retailers make decisions about what selection they choose to offer, as do we. As to your specific question about When Harry Became Sally, we have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.”
The senators who complained are Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Mike Braun, and Josh Hawley, who should really be focusing his attention on other things. They wrote to Bezos that the removal of the book was a sign “to conservative Americans that their views are not welcome on its platforms,” which is very odd considering what other bizarre and conservative stuff you can find on the platform.

They said the book was removed for “violating woke group think” and that Amazon had a “vague, undefined ‘offensive content’ standard.”
Well, it’s very clear now. The guidelines now clearly ban “books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.”
