Cherokee County Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Baker said what might be the worst possible thing one can say after a mass shooting: he claimed the man who murdered eight people was having a “bad day.”

“He was pretty much fed up and at the end of his rope and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did,” Baker said of shooter Robert Aaron Long.
Baker’s comments happened at a press conference on Wednesday, during which they also said the shooter had a “sex addiction,” and implied his decision to drive from spa to spa shooting Asian women was not racially motivated, and that he did it to “take out that temptation.”

After his viral moment, Baker’s old Facebook posts were found in which he was selling a t-shirt with the Corona beer label and the words “Covid 19 IMPORTED VIRUS FROM CHY-NA.”

In the caption, he wrote, “Love my shirt. Get yours while they last.”

It’s not too surprising that the officer who seemingly excused the actions of a mass murderer of Asian women would also be invested in the racist rhetoric that has risen during the pandemic. But the fact that he was making money off of it is especially disgusting.
And people want him out of office:

There seems to be no response yet from Baker about his t-shirt or the calls for his resignation. Maybe he’s trying to come up with a t-shirt.
