Singer and performer Cardi B was not pleased to learn that in the middle of a week featuring multiple police killings, mass shootings, and a historic verdict in the George Floyd trial, a Republican congressman took up congressional time to complain about her WAP performance at this year’s Grammys.

About a month after everybody had stopped talking about it, Representative Glenn Grothman made an entire speech claiming that he’s received complaints about the performance, calling on the FCC to ban anything like it in the future and bringing Vice President Kamala Harris into it for some reason.

“I’ve received complaints in my office, and rightfully so, about Cardi B and the Grammys,” he said on Thursday. “They wonder why we are paying the FCC if they feel this should be in living rooms across the nation. I realize that Kamala Harris has used her fame to promote this performer, but I assure the FCC that millions of Americans would view her performance as inconsistent with basic decency. Wake up, FCC, and begin to do your job.”

Cardi B, one of the co-authors of WAP, has already expressed irritation with politicians and pundits hyper-focusing on a performance that nobody was forced to watch while there are so many more pressing issues facing everyday people across the U.S. To have this pop up weeks later during such an eventful week on the issue of police brutality and murder seems to have been something of a last straw for the artist.
“This gets me so mad ya don’t even know!” she wrote. “I think we all been on the edge this week since we seen police brutality back to back including watching one of the biggest case in history go down DUE to police brutality but wait ! This is wat state representative decide to talk about.”

Cardi B responded to the Chauvin verdict on Twitter Tuesday with a simple comment on a quote tweet announcing he had been found guilty on all counts: “History.”
She also expressed displeasure toward a journalist who responded to the video of Grothman by asking to talk to anyone who has actually called his office to complain about WAP, with Cardi correctly noting that “THERES PEOPLE DYING.”
The artist also retweeted a post by attorney Ben Crump on Anthony Thompson Jr., who was killed by police in a high school bathroom after going to arrest him because he was allegedly carrying a gun. Reports initially claimed that the 17-year-old shot one of the officers, but it was later revealed that the cop accidentally shot himself before the other officers all started shooting, ending the child’s life.

“They first said Ant shot a cop before another returned fire, but now admit the cop accidentally shot himself!” wrote Crump. “Why isn’t anyone talking about this? We must demand answers!”
Perhaps Congress might find time to talk about Thompson if they would stop focusing on a single TV performance.
