Garage security footage recently shared on TikTok caught a group of Canadian cops lamenting the fact that their nation is becoming a more racially diverse place and speculating (wrongly) that white people have already become the minority in “North America.”

It’s unclear if they understand that Mexico is a part of North America, but in the U.S. and especially in Canada, white people still hold a strong majority, though this has been shrinking over time.

“Our days are done, white man’s day’s done,” says one of the cops while the others agree.
“The population of North America, we’re the minority I think, even at this point,” he continues.
“If you put all the different groups together, yeah,” says another officer.

At this point, you could make the argument that it’s not clear the cops in the video are saying this as a negative thing. Then it gets clearly, and weirdly, racist.
“Every couple you see walking by is a mixed couple,” says one. “White-Asian. White-East Indian. I told my son he can find a Chinese or an Asian girl if he wants to stay in the mix. Get your foot in the door.”
What door? We can only imagine what this is supposed to mean.
The video, shared by Andrew Younis, says that the officers were in that particular garage because they had come to an Ottawa man’s house “to harass him,” with the civilian described as Black in the video description.

In a follow-up video, Younis shares additional footage showing the officers making strange comments about the Ottawa man’s girlfriend, who arrives confused to find cops in the garage. They claim that he is home but is not opening the door, and she heads inside to check on him.
“He didn’t tell us that part, we would have come here faster,” one cop says once she’s out of earshot.
“Is she a dancer?” another asks.
“Might be, yeah, that’s probably it,” says the first.

It’s not perfectly clear what the officers mean by this, but commenters have speculated that because the girlfriend appeared to be white, it could only make sense to the cops for her to be dating him if she is a “dancer,” by which they mean a stripper. This makes the comment that they “would have come here faster” all the more disturbing.
The officers then appear to discuss using either the Ottawa man’s or his girlfriend’s car as “leverage” if they refuse to come out and remark that they think the man is “tapping the keg one last time,” presumably before he is arrested.

In a third and final video exposing the garage footage, one of the cops refers to their suspect as a “big Black guy” and “another waste of life, I think.”
After the video spread, CBC finally reported on the story and contacted the local police department to find out what they’re doing about these racist officers. The Ottawa Police Service responded to say that they’re conducting an “internal investigation.”
“Regardless of the intent, the comments expressed in the video have negatively impacted community members and service members,” the department said in an email. “The comments are offensive and they have further eroded public trust as well as internal morale.”
Unfortunately, police who investigate themselves tend to find that their police did nothing wrong or issue slaps on the wrist rather than effective punishments.
