There’s a lot of pressure out there on young people trying to get their lives figured out in an age where you can go online and see everyone else’s accomplishments and be bombarded by “30 under 30” lists everywhere you turn. Certainly, accomplishments gained at this stage of early adulthood are a thing to be celebrated, but it can easily get to the point where you might think the only achievements that matter are the ones you gain before age 25.

Those who have been through it know how challenging the time right after high school can be, whether or not you attend college, when you have to start in the workforce and discover how to do all those adulthood things. For many, doing that plus laying down one’s entire foundations for the whole rest of their lives at the same time is just too daunting a task, and framing ages 18 to 25 as a “make or break” period for life only creates unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Certainly, it is possible to build much of one’s life before age 25, as well as to destroy what you already had so far, but people are taking issue with a framing that seems to suggest that you can’t build your life and are stuck on a specific trajectory once this time period has passed.
In reality, many have built or rebuilt successful careers, families, and everything else that makes up life while much older than 25. Remember: Oprah Winfrey didn’t even start on what would later be renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show until she was nearly 30. Additionally, a number of actors, film directors, correspondents for major news networks, and business executives have commented to remind folks of how much older than 25 they were at the time they became successful.
