If you saw something that looked like it might be from the next Marvel movie or maybe The Day After Tomorrow 2: Tomorrower on the news or social media this weekend but people were saying it was real, it’s probably because an oil company set the ocean on fire.

In the latest fossil fuel-related leak causing yet another reminder that we’re hurtling toward a climate apocalypse with world governments doing little more than setting goals no one is on track to meet, Pemex created a situation that looked like Sauron taking a bath in the Gulf of Mexico and has been dubbed the “eye of fire.”

As a couple of boats worked to put out a fire that literally existed in the middle of the ocean, the world looked on in horror following a weekend of record-shattering heat waves that left both U.S. coasts sweltering as cities begged their residents to conserve power so our power infrastructure wouldn’t blow. Needless to say, it wasn’t exactly a comforting sight for those of us who believe in climate scientists on the subject of climate change and can only wonder just how bad things are going to get.

The only bright side is at least it’s got people talking about how the responsibility for this falls on oil corporations and others profiting off a dying industry, not on everyday people too tired to sort their recycling properly.

Once again, human beings found comfort in humor, with the vast majority of us just trying to get through each day without nearly the power necessary to change or even reform a system that requires infinite growth on a finite planet in order to function. We still have to go to work to pay the bills, so enjoy a couple more Lord of the Rings jokes and other people joking around before the heat melts the WiFi or whatever is next.
