Lil Nas X has become adept at doing something controversial and then clapping back at those who attempt to drag him for it on social media. That’s exactly what happened with the Lil Nas X BET Awards performance on Sunday, in which the very out rapper kissed a dancer at the end of an Egyptian pharaoh-themed version of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

Lil Nas X was open about decisions he made in the performance, heading to Twitter to note, “It took me a lot of time to mentally prepare for this performance. While on stage, I was trembling knowing that I was performing something like that in front of my straight peers. Even during the performance, I was having a hard time calming my nerves.”
Then, acknowledging people who were supportive online, he added, “Thank you guys for the love.”
But that wasn’t everyone. One person, bristling that two men kissing happened among performers nodding to ancient Egypt in their costumes, went all-caps to yell, “DONT USE AFRICAN CULTURE FOR SHITS LIKE THIS!!!!!!! RESPECT OUR ANCESTORS!”
That led Lil Nas X to quote tweet the observation with an epic clap back: “Y’all really like to pretend homosexuality didn’t exist in African culture.”
Someone corroborated that view, noting, “Homosexual stigma in African culture was almost entirely due to Christian missionaries. African culture has a rich history of sexually fluid practices.”

He also admitted that he is insecure about his sexuality to an aggressive fan who accused him over “overcompensating” and told him to “take a look at yourself in the mirror,” writing that he has a lot of “unlearning” to do when it comes to accepting himself.
Someone also asked, “Why did you force yourself?” in response to the tweet where he confessed what a challenge it was to him. He responded, “If you don’t push yourself outside of your comfort zone, you will never grow.”
The performance, despite bad energy from the stray haters, was widely praised, with several observers noting the Lil Nas X BET Awards performance nodded to a vintage Michael Jackson performance.
