In a moment that we all saw coming, though that doesn’t make it any less disgusting, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has officially taken the step of comparing Ashli Babbitt to George Floyd, appropriately during an interview with Greg Kelly on Newsmax. This comes as the inevitable result of far-right Republicans demanding that the Capitol police reveal the identity of the officers who shot and killed Babbitt as she was crawling through a broken window leading to where members of congress were evacuating during the January 6 insurrection.

“If this country can demand justice for someone like George Floyd, then we can certainly demand justice for Ashli Babbitt and everyone deserves to know who killed her,” said Greene. “Not just seeing a gun and a hand on a video clip, but we need to know who it is.”

Immediately after this, Greene went on to say that she opposes the commission to study what happened on January 6, 2021, and what led up to the attempted coup, calling it a “witch hunt” against Trump and Republicans, but also saying that she supports an investigation into what happened to Babbitt. She seems unable to make the connection that if the assault on the Capitol had not happened, Babbitt would very likely still be alive today.
Though Babbitt and Floyd were both killed by police, their circumstances were vastly different. Kneeling on a man’s neck as he says he can’t breathe while bystanders beg you to stop for over nine minutes is not the same thing as taking a shot at someone who was breaching the inner chambers where a huge gathering of the nation’s top legislators was fleeing a mob chanting “hang Mike Pence.”
Meanwhile, police departments across the U.S. are continuing to refuse to release the names of officers on staff who participated in the insurrection to zero complaints from Republicans like Greene. Republicans also tend to unconditionally support police departments that shield the identities of officers who kill poor Black people just trying to live their lives.
Though what happened to Babbitt was tragic and never should have happened, the comparison between her and George Floyd is going over as well as you would think.
