Leigh-Allyn Baker got up to speak at a Williamson County School Board meeting in Franklin, Tennessee, where she introduced herself as a “California refugee” to cheers from those gathered.
“I gave up everything there,” she continued. “A really successful Hollywood career, television shows — gave it all up for freedom and to come to this friendly place in Tennessee and be greeted with open arms and I love it here.”

Baker went on to claim that her children have exemptions to the COVID vaccine because they are “vaccine injured.”
“So my children are those rare children that will not be able to get the vaccine,” she said. “And still, I would never put them in a mask, because their brain needs oxygen to grow — which the neurologist can confirm.”
As her fellow anti-maskers applauded her from the crowd, she blasted the school board for believing they have the authority to mandate masks “because there are these books that I have — and I have them as a gift for you — the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers, and also the Bible.”
“And these guarantee my freedom and yours and our children’s to breathe oxygen,” Baker concluded to an actual standing ovation.
If the enthusiasm of the anti-maskers in the crowd didn’t already make you glad you don’t live in Franklin, Tennessee, perhaps the numbers might.
Last week, the state’s number of new COVID cases jumped by 78% compared to the previous week, with hospitalization and death rates going up by a respective 65% and 24%. Their death rate from the virus is higher than the national average, and less than 40% of the population is fully vaccinated — with only 17.3% of children aged 12-17 among them.

Tennessee is currently ranked 43rd in percent of the population vaccinated within the United States.
With those dismal numbers, it isn’t surprising that the Williamson County School Board implemented a mask mandate for children returning to school. But the meeting to discuss the mandate left attendees fearful for their safety, as anti-maskers were “screaming and threatening” people, according to one parent who is also a doctor.
As for Baker, her soapbox is similar to those of all the anti-maskers who have come before her in viral videos over the past year and a half — an apparent failure to understand how masks function, that freedom stops when it endangers others, and that the Bible does not dictate public life.
“What kinda masks are they wearing that don’t allow oxygen?” one Redditor asked after watching her speech.
“I’ve never understood their arguments,” another replied. “That’s okay, though, because neither do they.”
