A Florida nurse has been fired after breaching patient confidentiality and posting photos to Instagram mocking an infant in her care with a birth defect.

Sierra Samuels was a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami up until her shockingly bad decision to get a little too candid on social media.

She shared two photos of the baby last month, alongside the captions “My night was going great then boom!” and “Your intestines posed to be inside not outside baby.” Samuels also used the hashtag #gastroschisis, indicating the infant had an abdominal birth defect where the intestines are outside of the stomach rather than inside.

Hospital officials were made aware of Samuels’ posts on September 8, and put her on administrative leave while an investigation was underway not long after.

“Employees who violate these privacy rules, despite being educated, are subject to disciplinary action including suspension or termination,” read a statement from a representative for Jackson Health System. “As soon as we learned of this potential breach, we immediately placed the employee under administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The nurse was reportedly fired on September 15.

The hospital also notified the child’s mother of Samuels’ breach of their privacy — which constitutes a HIPAA violation, unlike being asked to wear a mask inside a grocery store.
