People Are Getting Savage Over Eric Clapton’s New Anti-Mask Ballad

Van Morrison and Eric Clapton have teamed up to put the final nail in the coffin of their reputations with a song called “Stand and Deliver,” the proceeds from which will go to benefit his Save Live Music campaign, Spin reports. It does not seem like Morrison wants to save live music by helping to end COVID-19 transmission and make the planet safe from an ongoing pandemic. He wants to save live music by acting like COVID doesn’t exist! Bold choice.

The song is a pretty horrendous ode to anti-mask ideology. Here’s a lyrics sample:

Do you want to be a free man? Do you want to be a slave?

Is this a sovereign nation or just a fascist state?

Classy.

A terrible song and it’s being received terribly. In response to a couple of old white male millionaires telling everyone to take their masks off so they can perform in front of adoring idiots again (even though that’s the opposite of how it works) people are taking some very personal shots against Eric Clapton.

Like this one from comedian Eliza Skinner, who made a joke that I think some people would call “dark humor.”

This is a reference to the death of Clapton’s four-year-old son Conor, who fell out a window in 1991. It’s a terrible and tragic story, obviously, but Clapton’s name circulating has people looking into his past generally. That past includes a few other details that are more about how Clapton is an awful person and less about his child.

Yes, he has been documented going on lots of awful racist rants about how England is a “white country” and to get the “foreigners” out, amongst other atrocities. This anti-mask thing isn’t really a departure from who Eric Clapton is, it’s actually kind of low-key for him.
