Emily, or @emilyinalaska as she’s known on TikTok, lives in a remote rural part of Alaska, and her followers love seeing her footage of the beautiful state, her hunting and skiing trips, and other details of her life. But they were deeply shook when she showed them what prices are like in the local grocery store.

Here Emily goes from pantry staple to pantry staple, showing the mark up on things like cheese, salsa, milk, and turkey breast.

Using the text-to-voice feature, the TikTok narrates, “The cost of living in Alaska is 24 percent higher than the national average.”
In the footage, a 32 oz. block of Tillamook cheddar cheese costs $24.99, a half a gallon of milk is $18.29, $7.99 for a container of salsa, and a pack of honey smoked turkey breast is $10.29. Almost twenty dollars for one gallon of milk—you know she’s rationing cereal with that expense.
A few commenters who are perhaps from Alaska themselves said that this is not the average when you get to cities like Anchorage or Fairbanks. The issue is that groceries have to travel farther and through more challenging conditions to reach rural areas, driving up the cost.
Emily later shared a TikTok from inside a grocery store in a city, and they’re much more normal.
A lot of people also wanted to know what the minimum wage in Alaska is, because they couldn’t figure out how anyone could afford anything at the grocery store unless they’re a millionaire. She drove by a McDonald’s advertising jobs starting at $12 an hour.

So you have to work about 2.5 hours to buy a single block of cheese. Honestly, I’d be stealing from the McDonald’s supply room at that point.
