A viral video shows a Ukrainian soldier warning Russian invaders to surrender while they “still have that chance” because he is certain things won’t be going well for them. He delivered his message in combat uniform while handling a gun and wearing a big smile. A subtitled version has been circulating on social media, and if it really says what it claims to say, it’s probably freaking out a lot of Russian conscripts right now.

“I’ll record this in Russian to make it be f—ing clear,” he begins. “Well guys – what’s up? What, is the Ukrainian night quiet? As the great Ukrainian writer Gogol said, is everything good with you kids? Do you like our Bayraktars?”

Bayraktars are aerial combat vehicles.

“What do you think – what’s flying above you right now? What do you think – what is rustling in the bushes my guys?” he threatens them. “What thoughts do you have about that? What the f— could it be? Dudes, you are f—ed!”

He continued, “You’ve stopped for now. We’re fine. We’re pulling up our reserves. We have aviation and we have tanks! We’ve got everything. Your ass is ours, fellows.”

The Ukrainian soldier did have a recommendation for any Russians who want to survive— surrender.

“How about this…why don’t you f—ing surrender while you still have that chance?” he asked. “Many of you have already chosen that path, it’s not that bad, really. It may be a mistake but we treat prisoners of war fairly well. So you are stuck right now, and soon we’ll start kicking your ass! And we’ll start doing it right now! Therefore, use your last chance!”

A lot of Russian soldiers are young men who were forcefully conscripted into the army, and some were not even informed they were entering a full-scale war against their neighboring country. Russian people and Ukrainian people have lived in close contact for ages, obviously, and it’s not unlikely that many of these soldiers had family and friends on the other side of the border.

The war is probably not popular with the soldiers fighting for it to happen, but Ukrainians are defending their country, which gives their position a little more general morale. You can definitely see that in this soldier’s tone.
