All 12 Waitresses At A Restaurant Plan To Ditch Work After Unqualified Man Is Hired And Immediately Promoted To Manager Over Them

Despite strides that have been made towards some semblance of gender equality in the past decades, anyone paying attention knows that sexism is still alive and well throughout the Western world. In 2020, the gender pay gap still had women earning 16% less than men across the board — numbers that, of course, look even more dire once you start factoring in race. And talking about wage disparity is the absolute tip of the iceberg.

But the better things get, the less women are willing to put up with obvious instances of sexism.

A recent post to reddit’s r/antiwork highlighted that, when a waitress dished on the unfair treatment she and her coworkers have been receiving from their restaurant’s owner and general manager, both of whom are men.

u/HurryTeeniebeanie explained that the entire staff at her restaurant is made up of women, although the two people in charge are both men. They previously had a male assistant manager as well, who was a friend of the manager’s brought in from the outside despite having no restaurant experience whatsoever.

“This guy has no left and we asked both the boss and manager to promote from within and give the job to anyone of us, we have the experience, are ready for the position, some of us have been working here for years, we know everything there’s to know,” she said. “They said they’d think about it and days after they hired another man, the son of a friend who had no restaurant experience at all.”

And yes, after five weeks working as a waiter, he was the one they chose to promote — not to assistant manager, but to manager, as their current manager will be going to open up a new branch elsewhere. The position of assistant manager, the owner has decided, will go unfilled as the staff has proved capable of working without one.

In another words, all 12 of them are capable enough to do their jobs without an assistant manager at all, but none were qualified enough to promote to do the job over someone with only five weeks of experience who just happened to be a man.

“Next week will be busy because of some local events taking place in town,” the OP continued. “We haven’t said a word but all 12 of us have decided not to show up for work. I’m already doing interviews in other places.”

It’s an infuriating but not too surprising situation, and redditors were eager to offer their support.

We have yet to hear an update as to how the day went, but one can only hope it was a complete disaster for the manager and the owner and all 12 servers found much, much better jobs.
