Conservative Christian Jesse Sumpter is a staff member at the evangelical Christ Church of Doug Wilson, according to the Friendly Atheist, and also a blogger. He doesn’t have too many followers on Twitter, but he definitely has a knack for saying the most asinine thing he possibly can in an effort to get massive engagement.
With the election coming up, Sumpter delivered an extremely cold take about voting. It’s over a century old!
He shared a text photo with the caption “A friendly reminder,” and reads, “Brothers, a friendly reminder for elections: make sure your wife votes exactly as you do.”
Um, how exactly are you going to do that? You’re not allowed to stand in the booth with her, so we’re talking something somewhat more sinister and coercive. A husband shouldn’t be able to “make sure” his wife votes the way he wants. One would hope you’re on the same political wavelength as your spouse, but if not, you can’t make the other person bend to your will.
Sumpter went even deeper on his terrible opinion:
His tweets have all been ratioed, especially by men who point out that they could easily make Sumpter’s wish come true by voting in accordance with their wive’s opinion:
All the comments pushed Sumpter to commit himself even harder to his idea, writing a long blog post about why men are responsible to the household’s vote. Basically, men are leaders, women “submit joyfully” to men, and that keeps them protected. He uses the idea of a party where a man’s wife is left to defend her vote, different from her husband’s, and is left vulnerable and embarrassed because he can’t defend her. And she can’t defend herself, I guess?
“This also leads to the important point that the husband should be talking with his wife about politics and about the candidates,” he continues. “This is part of the husband’s duty as well: to make sure she knows about the candidates and issues. She should not be a blind follower but a knowledgeable follower as well as a counsellor to him.”
Babe, just let your wife watch the news and trust her to know how to stick up for herself at the next Bible study group.
Voter intimidation is illegal even if it’s your husband
