On Saturday morning, the news came through that Joe Biden would be the 46th president of the United States, after many days of watching states go from light red to light blue. There are plenty of Joe Biden stans out there, of course, but the energy in the streets was much more about the end of Donald Trump in the White House. People went to stand outside the White House to flip him off and they flooded every town square and corner in cities across the country. Then they partied.

Though we are in the middle of a pandemic, the urge to go shake your butt over a fascist demagogue being ousted from the government is hard to resist. Many responsibly wore masks, at least until the champagne started flowing. The celebrations were epic and they really reminded people of something pretty cinematic.

At the end of The Return of the Jedi, our heroes party on Endor after the fall of the evil Empire. Years of a suppressive and violent government are over and a better future awaits—until the sequels that they didn’t know about yet. Uh oh, hope that’s not a sign!
More than one person noticed that the footage of people dancing, playing music, and generally hooting and hollering was very similar to this celebratory moment:

As Vox pointed out, however, it was only in the Special Edition version of Return of the Jedi, released in 1997, that we got to see universe wide partying. George Lucas didn’t yet have the technology to affordable animate aliens dancing, so we were confined to Endor:
