In 2016, Donald Trump infamously won the election via the Electoral College while losing the popular vote to Hillary Rodham Clinton. He has spent quite a bit of his presidency railing about that and insisting he actually beat her in every way. He also called his 306 electoral votes a “landslide” victory. People are pointing out that’s ironic, because Joe Biden is currently projected to win with exactly 306 electoral votes.

At the time, Trump’s ghoulish mouth pieces like Kellyanne Conway also called Trump’s win historic:

CNN reporter Daniel Dale even helpfully collected all the statements Trump made about his 306 precious electoral votes over the years, at least the public ones:

Of course, now that Trump has lost to Joe Biden, he’s not too impressed with the number 306. He has refused to concede and is throwing up lawsuits in states wherever he can, attempting to disenfranchise voters and cast doubt on elections results. Essentially, he’s attempting a very disorganized coup and it’s pretty scary when it’s not pathetic.
It should also be noted that NPR fact-checked Trump’s historic claims years ago, and while it was unexpected that he’d beat Clinton, the numbers weren’t very historic at all:
Trump won 306 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232. That puts him comfortably above the required 270 electoral votes. But it’s hard to argue this represents a landslide of historic proportions, given that out of 58 presidential elections, the winner has received more electoral votes in 37 contests.
