Marjorie Taylor Greene Draws Criticisms Over Petty Transphobic Display

Marjorie Taylor Greene is locked in a feud with one of her fellow representatives after a cruel attempt at blocking the Equality Act turned personal.

On Wednesday, Greene spoke out against the Equality Act, pushing a common argument among transphobes that transgender rights infringe upon women’s rights.

“I just made a motion to adjourn in order to give every Member of Congress time to rethink destroying #WomensRights and #WomensSports and #ReligiousFreedom before voting for the #EqualityAct!” she wrote on Twitter.

In reality, the Equality Act is set to protect marginalized groups based on gender identity and sexual orientation across the country, something its defenders believe to be necessary as different states have different levels of protection for LGBTQ residents.

It’s a fight that’s personal to Illinois representative Marie Newman, whose daughter is trans.

In a show of support for the trans community, and to send a message to Greene, Newman recorded a video in which she puts up the trans flag outside of her office—which happens to be across the hall from the QAnon Congresswoman.

“Our neighbor, @RepMTG, tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is ‘disgusting, immoral, and evil,’” she wrote. “Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door.”

It wasn’t long before Greene responded by adding something of her own to the hallway—a sign that says “There are TWO genders: MALE & FEMALE,” followed by a mocking note to “Trust the Science,” something Republicans have become known for failing to do.

While both actions could be interpreted as petty, Newman’s symbol of choice is a show of support, whereas Greene’s is yet another instrument of division and bigotry—especially when paired with the fact that she also took aim at Newman’s daughter personally.

“Your biological son does NOT belong in my daughters’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams,” Greene wrote, quoting a tweet from Newman about her support for the Equality Act.

Transphobes everywhere showed their support for Greene’s unveiled bigotry, but she had far more critics—including some members and supporters of her own party.

And her attempt to throw “science” back at Democrats who support the Equality Act failed miserably.

The Equality Act ultimately has plenty of support in the House and previously passed in 2019 before getting ignored in the Senate, due partly to former President Trump’s comment that he would veto it regardless.

But with a Democrat majority in both the House and Senate, and Joe Biden in the White House, this may be the best opportunity to pass it into law — and with people like Greene being this petty and hateful about people who are different from them, it’s not hard to see why that needs to happen.
