Like many outspoken conservatives looking for any opportunity to bash Hollywood, Ted Cruz opted to speak out against the firing of Gina Carano from The Mandalorian following her repeated ill-advised social media posts that were labeled transphobic and antisemitic, to start.

And now, his comments have drawn an epic clap back from Star Wars heroine Daisy Ridley.

On February 11, the senator lamented that Carano “broke barriers in the Star Wars universe,” insinuating that she portrayed the first female character who was “not a princess, not a victim, not some emotionally tortured Jedi.”
While there is an argument to be made that Star Wars—like most major franchises with a long history—could benefit from more female characters, taking a dig at the existing ones simply isn’t it.
Specifically taking a dig at Ridley’s character, Rey, comes with its own long history of controversies and criticisms of misogyny.

Unfortunately for Cruz, that also means Ridley is a master at dealing with that kind of nonsense.
Yahoo’s Kevin Polowy chatted briefly with Ridley about Cruz’s tweet, and regardless of anyone’s specific feelings about either Rey as a character or Carano’s removal from the franchise, her response was perfectly on point.
“In defending I guess his favorite Star Wars actor, Gina Carano, recently, Texas senator Ted Cruz seemed to take a shot at Rey,” Polowy said. “He said she was not some ‘emotionally tortured Jedi.’ I was going to ask you if you had any response.”
“I did not know and I’m very happy to be an emotionally tortured Jedi…who doesn’t leave their state when it’s having a terrible time,” Ridley shot back.

Ridley is obviously referring to Cruz’s recent trip down to Mexico in the middle of the winter storm that left millions of Texans without electricity, without heat, without water, and apparently without help from some of their elected officials. The deeply despised senator has faced enormous backlash for the decision, despite his last-minute scrambling to do damage control.
No one ever seems to need more reasons to drag Cruz, but the opportunity is always appreciated.
