Part of American life in the modern age is never knowing when or where a shooting might break out. When someone shoots up a school, the American response is to install metal detectors and forbid children from using backpacks. It’s simply how things work here, with the people in charge seem disinclined to do anything about it.

Arlington, Texas, was the site of the latest school shooting on Wednesday. Four people were injured and the shooter fled, but later turned himself in to police. Three of the injured were hospitalized but all are expected to survive. This time.
But students who have spent their childhoods running active shooter drills in the classroom and parents who have sent their kids to school every day fearing the worst were still traumatized by the life-threatening violence.

One text exchange between a mother and child in particular has captivated the country after it was shared by CBS reporter Jason Allen.
The screenshot shows a striking dichotomy, capturing both the fear and anxiety of the situation right alongside something resembling resignation, or at the very least a lack of shock, as if something so horrific was always inevitable.
People watching the events of the day unfold online were frustrated by the extreme likelihood that this still won’t trigger any sort of gun reform.

For as much as Republicans may constantly act as if they’re worried about children, they’re also the ones constantly blocking meaningful gun reform, and those same children are the ones paying the price.

Last month, Texas made it legal in most cases for people over the age of 21 to carry a handgun in public, concealed or not, without a permit or any training. The measure had the full support of many prominent Republicans, including Governor Greg Abbott, who seem to believe that allowing just about anyone to run around with a gun will actually help people stay safe.
