All eyes were on Britney Spears this week as she addressed the court directly in an attempt to finally get out from under the conservatorship that has ruled her life for 13 years. But attention from one unexpected source has been drawing backlash.

Justin Timberlake, who famously dated the “Baby One More Time” singer from 1999 to 2002, voiced support for his ex on Twitter after her remarks.
“After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time,” he wrote. “Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right.”

While Timberlake is absolutely right, the frustration with his commenting on the situation stems from how he handled their breakup nearly two decades ago.
The former boybander fed into theories that Spears was the one who caused their breakup, insinuating that she cheated on him with his music video for “Cry Me a River” and being purposely cagey in multiple interviews to make it seem like he was the jilted one.
The overall treatment of Spears by the media, public figures, and those once in her life has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, as we as a society grapple with the deeply ingrained misogyny that has toppled female stars for things that would never even touch a man’s reputation. And people aren’t willing to let Timberlake’s support of his ex slide without commenting on the wrongs that helped us get to this place.
